How I installed MySQL, RVM, Ruby, and Rails on Lion

Install MySQL on Lion (Mac OS X 10.7)

Download the 64-bit .dmg of MySQL and install everything it comes with.

Add the following lines to your ~/.profile file

  export CC=/usr/bin/gcc-4.2
  export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH="/usr/local/mysql/lib:$DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH"

Go to the MySQL panel in System Preferences and start your MySQL Server

Then run these commands in terminal:

  cd /usr/local/mysql
  sudo ./scripts/mysql_install_db
  sudo ./bin/mysql_secure_installation

Install RVM, Ruby, and Rails on Lion

Open up terminal and run this command:

bash < <(curl -s https://rvm.beginrescueend.com/install/rvm)

Add the following line to the end of your ~/.profile file

[[ -s "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" ]] && . "$HOME/.rvm/scripts/rvm" # Load RVM function

Restart terminal, then run the commands:

  rvm install 1.9.2
  rvm use 1.9.2
  rvm gemset create rails3
  rvm use 1.9.2@rails3 --default

You can now gem install rails, gem install rails -v=3.0.4, bundle install, etc.

Interesting Convo between DHH and Obie over Twitter

DHH: “It’s a sure thing unless you’re the fool left holding the bag when the road comes to an end. And the road will end.”, http://bit.ly/gb8pfl

Obie: @dhh Why do you care? You do your thing well and mint money. What fools are doing with their money should be the least of your worries

DHH: @obie Are you serious? So nobody should care that suckers bought worthless inet stock in 2000 or CDOs in 2007? Destruction of wealth sucks.

Obie: @dhh Sounds like you’re railing against human nature with that one. Seems better to ride the cyclical waves and profit

DHH: @obie @fowlduck Everyone hurts when bubbles inflate and burst. Whether they’re in tech or housing. Shame on those who see, but don’t tell.

DHH: @obie That’s depressingly cynical. So the banks that rode the CDO/CDS engine for all it’s worth were doing the right thing? Fuck the losses?

Obie: @dhh Let’s see you break out from your comfort zone at 37signals and create something new for some of those millions to flow into ;)

DHH: @obie How about we focus our energy on sustainable businesses that actually produce real wealth? There are enough con men. Don’t join them.

DHH: @obie I’m content producing real, sustainable wealth through 37s for the next 20 yrs. I have zero interest in chase a ride on a VC dragon.

Obie: @dhh That’s a strawman. I can work on sustainable biz (and have a track record doing so) regardless of what the market does. Bubble or not

Obie: @dhh What I was getting at is that you might be better off starting something new instead of coasting at 37s and tweeting about bubbles

DHH: @obie How exactly am I, 37signals, or the market going to be better off if I quit a growing business to chase VC millions?!

DHH: @obie If you can work on a sustainable business, why would you ever consider joining the con game of flipping shit to the ignorant?

Obie: Millions slosh around markets no matter what. The ?? is whether entrepreneurs like me and @dhh that “get it” create opps or sit on sidelines

Obie: I probably miscalculate what growth stage 37signals is currently in. Seems like a pretty stable mature operation to me

DHH: @obie Bubbles aren’t immune to criticism and once the opposition voices roam loud enough, they often implode. The faster, the better.

Obie: I’m interested in what @dhh can do “next” if he sets his mind to it. (I admit it might have a lot to do with my own situation.) #fckthbbl

DHH: @obie I think the obsession w/ “next” is partly why we have this flipper bubble. So few are willing to stick it out for the long term. I am.

LivePerson with Nikola from App Sumo

Last month a friend of mine, Stephan Weitberg, sent me a link to the current App Sumo deal which included a bunch of “developer apps” for the low low price of only $47. All of a sudden a chat box pops up asking me how its going! Like those people who have long responses when bums harass people for change, I decided to engage Nikola.

nikola: …believe it or not, I’m human:) How’s it going?

me: hello

nikola : hello there, what do you think of the bundle?

me: im trying to figure out which apps i’d use. did you catch conan last night

nikola : sorry , i’m not in US [smile] anything i can help you with ?

me: do you know if the heroku offer is still available

nikola : let me check… yes , its still available

me: great, thanks nikola! that helps in my decision making process

nikola : glad i could help

me: ok i have an idea on how to use all these apps in the bundle… let me know what you think

nikola : sure [smile]

me: Build a geotargeted daily deals app that detects a user’s location with InfoChimps, and sends the deals to you via text message through Twilio and emails through SendGrid. Charge people monthly for the “premium deals” through Recurly. Use Linode as our app server and MongoHQ as our database. Set up a hot live backup on Heroku in case Linode or MongoHQ goes down. Hoptoad and New Relic will let us know if our server goes down or if there are any app errors. Finally, SauceLabs will make sure that suburban moms using IE5 will be able to get our deals. Get Angel VC within 3 months and all we would have paid to do all this is $47.00.

nikola : sounds amazing !

me: glad you think so, thanks for your input!

nikola : no problem

Dear Matt Hunter

Dear Matt Hunter,

In reply to your tweet regarding the Facebook Gem, and my subsequent message on GChat about “Facebooker,” I would like to offer you a convenient link to the Facebooker gem. I wish you the best of luck with it (trust me, you’ll need it). Finally, I would like to multi-modally thank you for the introductions leading to today’s Fred Wilson post about We Are NY Tech.

Sincerely,

Eric Tarn

Your 10k Apart

We lost the 10k Apart contest, so I figured I’d upload the screen that appears when you submit your entry:

What I Learned from Startup Bootcamp 2010
  • Just start programming and build something.
  • Keep focused and always have a plan that you must change/adapt as necessary.
  • Be nice to everybody and grow your network.

Chris Wanstrath, founder of GitHub

Its okay if your idea is unoriginal, mundane, or has a terrible pitch. Github was created as a tool to help the founders build their original startup idea, Famspam, a way for family members to keep in touch. If you were a VC, would you invest in FamSpam or “A Social Hosted Distributed Concurrent Versions System?”

Mick Mountz, founder of Kiva Systems

To start your company, flip the switch in your mind. You are now a startup, act like it. Then, build your product (or prototype).

Ayr Muir, founder of Clover Food Lab

Introduce elements from a science lab into your business, conduct experiments and learn from them.

George Bell of General Catalyst Partners (ex-Excite CEO)

Look for the small breakthrough not the big one. Be accountable and don’t be late.

Bob MetCalfe, inventor of Ethernet

You sell successfully by making a small promise and keeping it. Then make successively bigger promises. Always keep focus and have a plan. Make sure the nerds and suits get along and acknowledge the others group’s importance.

Bill Clerico, founder of WePay

Build your product first. Don’t be a dick to people and network

James Lindenbaum, founder Heroku

Always have a plan, but be prepared to throw out what is needed when your plan inevitably changes

Alexis Ohanian, founder reddit

Don’t be a dick to people and network Just start building your product, you don’t need an excuse like “move to Silicon Valley”

Kevin Hale, founder Wufoo

Your can have the: 1. Best price - You must focus on reducing costs and operations, like Wal-Mart 2. Best product - You must spend tons of money on R&D, like Apple 3. Best overall - You must treat your customers the best, like Zappos
